NORCURE Electrochemical Chloride Removal Project
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation
Bridge Substructure Highways # 11 & 16, Saskatoon, SK

The Norcure Electrochemical Chloride Removal System was installed and operated on the lower half of 24 columns on the Highway #11 / 16 overpass substructure for Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation. The system operated from July 27 to October 3rd, 1994.

The majority of chloride ions were removed from all locations with significant initial chlorides. In these areas the percentage of chlorides removed varied between 62% and 88%. The chloride concentration at the level of the reinforcing steel is now below the threshold for corrosion.

A potential survey was completed in the spring of 1995 to document the reduction in the corrosion potentials resulting from the Norcure treatment. Corrosion potentials for the columns are substantially reduced from the original (before treatment) readings.
