NORCURE Electrochemical Chloride Removal Project
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation
Bridge Substructure Highways # 11 & 6, Regina, SK

The Norcure Electrochemical Chloride Removal System was installed and operated on the 12 columns of the Highway #11 / 6 overpass substructure, Regina, for Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation. The system operated from July 20th to September 14th, 1995.

The majority of chloride ions were removed from all locations with significant initial chlorides. In these areas the percentage of chlorides removed was up to 80%. The chloride concentration at the level of the reinforcing steel is now below the threshold for corrosion.

A potential survey was completed in the summer of 1996 to document the reduction in the corrosion potentials resulting from the Norcure treatment. Corrosion potentials for the columns are substantially reduced from the original readings, and are now within the passive range.
