NORCURE Electrochemical Chloride Removal Project
Virginia Department of Transportation/
Virginia Transportation Research Council
34th Street over I-395 Bridge Deck, Arlington, VA

The Norcure Electrochemical Chloride Removal System was installed and operated on two spans of 34th Street over I-395 bridge deck for Virginia Department of Transportation. The system operated in two phases from April 18th to June 14th, 1996 and July 25th to September 20th, 1996.

The majority of chloride ions were removed from all locations with significant initial chlorides. The chloride concentration at the level of the reinforcing steel is now below the threshold for corrosion. Approximately 79 % of chlorides were removed from the deck.

Reference electrodes installed after treatment will be monitored to provide long term performance data.
