NORCURE Electrochemical Chloride Removal Project
Alberta Transportation and Utilities
Highway #2 and Grandin Avenue Overpass, Morinville

The Norcure Electrochemical Chloride Removal System was installed and operated on the lower 3 meters of 4 columns on the Highway #2 / Grandin Avenue overpass substructure for Alberta Transportation and Utilities. The system operated from May 25th to August 11th, 1994.

The majority of chloride ions were removed from all locations with significant initial chlorides. In these areas the percentage of chlorides removed varied between 62% and 96%. The chloride concentration at the level of the reinforcing steel is now below the threshold for corrosion.

A potential survey was completed in the summer of 1996 to document the reduction in the corrosion potentials resulting from the Norcure treatment. Corrosion potentials for the columns are substantially reduced from the original readings, and are now within the passive range.
